apicoectomy

Apicoectomy

There are cases when the tooth is firmly in place, but unfortunately we have inflammation at the root tip, which cannot be treated conservatively. In such cases, we often come to the aid of an intervention called apicectomy, which involves surgically removing the tip of the tooth root.

Apicoectomy (root-end resection) is a dental surgical procedure aimed at preserving a natural tooth when an inflammatory lesion at the tip of the root cannot be successfully eliminated through conventional endodontic treatment (root canal therapy).

During the procedure, the surgeon accesses the root tip through a small surgical opening, removes the inflamed tissue and the affected portion of the root, and, when necessary, seals the root canal to prevent reinfection. This approach eliminates the source of infection and helps prevent further progression of the inflammatory process while preserving the patient’s natural tooth.

An apicoectomy may be recommended in cases of persistent pain, periapical inflammation, cysts, granulomas, or pathological changes that remain after previous root canal treatment. Thanks to modern technologies and accurate diagnostics, the procedure is performed with a high level of safety and predictability, offering an effective tooth-saving solution.
